I can no longer laugh

Some years ago I was in Colombia, writing about the art scene, meetings artists and gallerists. The one artist they all referred to with respect and love was Beatriz Gonzalez. I was lucky enough to have the time to visit her great work Auras Anónimas in Bogota’s main cemetery. She lined the wall of a crumbling columbarium, where urns are placed in niches, with 8,956  silhouettes in silk-screen prints of the cargueros, the porters, who carried the dead to their rest. It was moving to see the people who had lost the ones they love visiting the cemetery.
